Horses have been bred over the centuries to do different jobs, and there are hundreds of different breeds around. Each person has their favourite breed and in this article we will talk about a few of the more popular breeds in US.
Appaloosa - The Nez Perce Indians of northern Idaho developed the Appaloosa breed but after they were forced onto reservations the Appaloosa breed fell into decline. A concerned group of breeders then noticed this decline and started taking steps to combat this and now the Appaloosa breed is one of the most popular breeds in the US. It's easy to spot an Appaloosa as they have distinctive spotted coat.
Arabian - The Arabian horse which originated in the Middle East is one of the oldest, purest and most recognisable horse breed in the world. They are known for their intelligence and stamina. Throughout the centuries they have been used to improve the quality of other breeds.
Morgan - The Morgan horse was developed during the 1700s in Vermont, USA. It was developed from a stallion named Justin Morgan, hence the name.
Quarter Horse - The Quarter Horse gets its name from the fact that it can run faster than any other breed over a distance of a quarter-mile. The Quarter Horse is very popular in United States and has an easy going quiet temperament.
Thoroughbred - Thoroughbreds are the fastest horses in the world and that is why they are used in horse racing. They were developed in England in the 1700s for the purpose of racing.
